6 important tips for buying high quality Medicinal Mushrooms: Make an empowered decision

Are you feeling inspired by the amazing healing benefits of medicinal mushrooms? Before you go ahead and purchase the next best medicinal mushroom supplement, do your due diligence to make sure you are getting what you expected.

There is a myriad of brands out there with prices being all over the place. Unfortunately the quality and medicinal value also varies significantly. We, at Sacred Source Botanicals, would like to support you in making an informed and empowered decision and not be disappointed with an inferior quality product.

In short, here is what you should watch out for when choosing the best source for your medicinal mushrooms.

  1. Where was it grown and was it grown organically?
  2. Which part of the mushroom was used? The fruiting body?
  3. How was it grown? Was it grown on trees?
  4. How was it prepared? Was it extracted?
  5. Does it have scientifically proven high levels of beta-glucan?
  6. Does it have any added ingredients such as binders and fillers?

And now each point explained in more detail:

1) Where was it grown and was it grown organically?

Certified organic or wildcrafted is a minimum, though is not necessarily sufficient when it comes to product purity. To make sure we get the purest, potent, toxin free medicinal mushroom product, the mushroom has to grow in an environmentally safe area, far away from polluted soil, air and water. Of particular concern are heavy metals and radiation.

Certain mushrooms hyper-accumulate heavy metals which make them great environmental detoxifiers. However, before they are sold as healing supplements they need to be tested for any heavy metal particles to ensure its safety and purity.

2) Which part of the mushroom was used? The fruiting body?

Mushrooms have two distinctive parts, the fruiting body and mycelium, which are very different in terms of their makeup and their compounds. The fruiting body is the actual mushroom that is shown on most product images. The mycelium is the vegetative body, in a way its rooting system. The medicinal compounds, which the medicinal mushrooms are famous for, are found in the fruiting body, not in the mycelium. This is very important, since many mushroom products on the market consist mostly of mycelium.

In addition, the majority of such mycelium products are grown on grain. In these cases, the grains are inoculated with the mycelium. What is found in the end product is basically ground up grain with mycelium, which has very little medicinal value.

Take away: The product description needs to clearly state that the actual fruiting body was used. If it mentions mycelium, be alert and look a little closer!

3) How was it grown? Was it grown on trees?

There’s basically two ways that mushrooms are being produced and offered to the public.

This mycelium on grain provides very low yields of medicinal value. The beta-d-glucans that are proven to have incredibly healing effects, are almost absent when grown from grains. Sadly, that is most of what’s being offered in the grocery stores, health food stores and online.

Take away: Check the product description. If the mushroom was grown on trees or tree logs, the supplier will be proud to let you know.

4) How was it prepared? Was it extracted?

The medicinal compounds of medicinal mushrooms are not bioavailable in its raw form. In order to take advantage of the many powerful properties, the medicinal compounds have to be extracted. Learn more about the importance of extraction and how to understand extraction ratios here.

Take away: The product description needs to clearly state that the mushroom was extracted, it needs to show an extraction ratio and explain which extraction method was used.

5) Does it have scientifically proven high levels of beta-glucan?

Beta-glucan is the star compound in medicinal mushrooms. Among other active and medicinal compounds it is the main one that makes medicinal mushrooms so powerful. Scientifically verified levels of beta-glucan are a key indicator when in comes to gaging a mushrooms potency along with its extraction ratio.

Don’t be fooled by product descriptions that list multiple “active” compounds without any actual testing results or list tested levels of compounds that are potentially of inferior medicinal value, such as polysaccharides or alpha-glucans.

Note: Beta-glucan belongs to the polysaccharide family. However, not all polysaccharides are the same. They actually can be simply starch, which is an alpha glucan and a major component of mycelium on grain products, which we know is what we want to avoid.

Take away: To reap the true medicinal value of medicinal mushrooms, it is very important to check for the scientifically verified level of beta-glucan.

6) Does it have any added ingredients such as binders and fillers?

To ensure your mushroom products medicinal integrity, it should not contain any added ingredients such as carriers, fillers, binders, coloring or flow agents. The ingredients should simply list the fruiting body of the respective mushroom with its latin name. Period.

Conclusion:

A high quality extracted fruiting body (mushroom) is needed with scientifically verified high levels of beta-glucan to really elicit the promised deep healing effects.
